Three Heating System Choices for San Antonio

01

Gas Furnace

SA Default Option

02

Heat Pump

Electric-Only Option

03

Dual-Fuel Hybrid

Hill Country Solution

Choice #1: Gas Furnace (the SA default if you have a gas line)

When this is the right call

You have a natural gas line at the meter, you want the lowest install cost, and you want reliable heat on hard-freeze nights below 25 degrees when heat pumps lose efficiency. Most SA homes built after 1990 fall here.

Why SA-specific

The 2021 freeze (Uri) showed gas furnaces kept producing heat through grid stress as long as the indoor blower had power. SA building stock from the 1990s on was designed around gas, which makes like-for-like replacement the simplest path.

What we install

Single-stage 80 percent and 96 percent AFUE units from Day & Night, American Standard, and Trane. Single-stage is the default. We install two-stage or variable-speed when a customer asks.

Choice #2: Heat Pump (the electric-only and gas-averse option)

When this is the right call

You do not have a gas line at the meter, you currently heat with window units or electric resistance, or you want one system to handle cooling and heating.

Why SA-specific

SA's heating load is modest. Most days that need heat sit between 35 and 60 degrees, the sweet spot for heat pump efficiency. A 15.2 SEER2 / 8.1 HSPF2 unit produces three to four units of heat per unit of electricity in that range.

What we install

Single-stage heat pumps from Day & Night, American Standard, and Trane, paired with an air handler with a 5-10 kW electric heat strip for hard-freeze nights. Heat pumps make sense for gas-averse and electric-only homes but are not our default recommendation.

Choice #3: Dual-Fuel Hybrid (the Hill Country shoulder-season pattern)

When this is the right call

You live in Boerne, Bulverde, Canyon Lake, Mystic Shores, Cordillera, or another Hill Country area that sees more shoulder-season cold than central SA.

Why SA-specific

Hill Country runs 3-7 degrees colder than downtown SA in winter, and shoulder-season days bounce between 35 and 60 degrees for weeks, which is ideal heat pump territory. But hard-freeze nights can hit the high teens, too cold for a heat pump alone.

What we install

A single-stage gas furnace paired with a single-stage heat pump on one thermostat with dual-fuel logic. About one in four Hill Country estimates ends up dual-fuel; the rest are straight gas furnace replacements.

Our Installation Process, Start to Finish

Product
  • A senior tech or Tommy walks the home, measures the conditioned square footage, inspects equipment and ductwork, checks the gas line and flue, and runs a Manual J load calculation. 60-90 minutes typical.

  • Verbatim parts, labor, permitting, and disposal pricing on a written estimate. No hidden fees, no scope creep after signing. Financing through Wells Fargo, FTL, or AC Credit Services runs on the same visit. 0 percent APR promotional terms for qualified buyers.

  • Above & Beyond pulls every permit required by the City of San Antonio and surrounding jurisdictions. Most installations schedule within 5-10 business days of contract signing; freeze-night emergencies push to the front.

  • The same lead tech from the estimate runs the installation crew. Drop cloths from front door to attic. Old equipment removed, refrigerant recovered to EPA standards, lines pressure-tested and held under vacuum. Most installations finish in one day.

  • Manufacturer commissioning checklist before we leave: refrigerant charge, gas pressure at the burner manifold, blower-amp draw, temperature split, and thermostat operation walked through with you at the unit.

  • City inspector arrives within 1-3 business days of completion. We meet the inspector on-site and handle any corrective work at no cost. Once inspection passes, you get the manufacturer 10-year parts warranty registered in your name plus our 2-year labor warranty.

CLIENT NOTE: The page heading and What Every Install Includes table say warranty registration happens day-of-installation. The FAQ section says within 60 days. Confirm the correct timeframe and standardize before publishing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a new heating system cost in San Antonio?

+

80 percent AFUE gas furnace: $4,500-$7,500. 96 percent AFUE: $5,500-$9,500. Single-stage heat pump: $6,500-$11,500. Dual-fuel hybrid: $9,500-$15,500. Complete furnace-plus-AC: $7,500-$19,500 depending on tier. The free estimate nails the exact number.

Gas furnace, heat pump, or dual-fuel, which one do I need?

+

Gas line plus central or south SA generally means gas furnace. No gas line, or currently heating with window units or electric resistance, generally means heat pump. Hill Country (Boerne, Bulverde, Canyon Lake, Mystic Shores) is often the right fit for a dual-fuel hybrid. We walk all three options on the estimate.

Why is single-stage your default install instead of variable-speed?

+

Variable-speed and modulating systems have more electronics and a higher parts-replacement rate. The efficiency gain in a mild SA winter does not always justify the tradeoff. We install two-stage and modulating when a customer asks. We do not push the higher-margin equipment.

What is the warranty on a new install?

+

Manufacturer 10-year parts warranty registered in your name. Above & Beyond 2-year labor warranty. Maintenance plan members ($159 per year) get the labor warranty extended through the life of the plan.

What brands do you install?

+

Day & Night (Carrier family) is our Elite Dealer line and most-installed brand. Carrier for customers who request the Carrier name. American Standard for the Trane-family build at a more accessible price point. Trane for the top-tier line. We install other brands on request.
