Above & Beyond Air Conditioning & Heating is a San Antonio company built by Tommy Coffey, 30 years in the trade, born and raised in SA, founded the business in 2019 with one person and one truck. We service Bexar, Comal, and Guadalupe counties across Stone Oak, Alamo Heights, Helotes, Boerne, Canyon Lake, New Braunfels, Schertz, Cibolo, and surrounding communities. About 80% of our work is residential repair, replacement, and indoor air quality and the rest is light commercial.

A real person answers the phone, we run an honest diagnostic, we write the estimate before any work starts, and the same technician who diagnosed the problem does the repair. No phone trees, no commission-driven techs, no upselling. Whether your AC quits on a 105-degree August afternoon, your furnace will not ignite during the first cold front, or you need a maintenance contract for a property portfolio, one call gets you a real person who can help.

30 Years in the San Antonio HVAC Trade

Tommy Coffey built Above & Beyond after 30 years in the San Antonio HVAC trade. He started as a porter at a local San Antonio HVAC company, worked his way through every role on the truck and in the shop, and in 2019 went independent with a single truck, tired of watching customers at a larger SA outfit slip through the cracks once their invoice was paid. The company name is the lesson he wants every customer experience to deliver: do the work that other shops would walk away from, then do a little more.

Tommy was born and raised in San Antonio, 50 years here, never lived anywhere else. Today, the team is five field technicians (Matthew, Victor, TJ, Stevie, Joshua) plus office and dispatch, with a combined 100 years of HVAC experience and a core crew that has worked together for more than a decade. Tommy still answers the phone, runs the dispatch board, and personally shows up for the harder service calls. He prefers to be called the general manager rather than the owner because the title fits how he actually spends his day better than owner does.

Our Process

When You Schedule Above & Beyond — What Actually Happens

No mystery, no surprise charges, no rotating subcontractor crews. The same workflow runs every time, whether the call is a 3 PM tune-up booking or a 2 AM emergency.

2

On-Site Diagnostic (Free $89 Value With Repair)

Roughly 30 minutes on-site. Refrigerant pressures verified against manufacturer spec, capacitor microfarad test, compressor amp draw, electronic refrigerant leak detection on every accessible joint, static pressure across coil and filter, drain line and float switch check, temperature split across the evaporator. You see every reading. The $89 diagnostic fee is waived when you proceed with a repair on the same visit.

3

Written Estimate Before Any Repair

Verbatim parts and labor pricing before we touch the system. The price we quote is the price you pay, no hidden fees, no commission-driven upsell. You decide what to repair and what to defer. About one in eight calls ends with our honest recommendation that replacement makes more sense, and that is your decision, not ours.

4

Repair On-Site, 80% First Visit Fix Rate

Every truck stocks capacitors, contactors, motors, refrigerants (R-410A reclaimed, R-454B, R-32), ignitors, flame sensors, and common control boards. Most repairs finish on the first visit. For warranty parts off the truck, Day & Night Elite Dealer status gets factory-direct delivery in 24 hours vs 5 to 10 business days at a non-dealer. Every repair finishes with a quality check, written invoice, and 30-day callback warranty.

Why Customers Stay

Four Reasons Homeowners and Property Managers Stay With Us

San Antonio HVAC is a crowded market, with national chains, price-war local operators, and premium specialists. Here is exactly where Above & Beyond is different.

01

30 Years in the SA Trade, Owned by Tommy Coffey

Three decades in the San Antonio HVAC trade. Tommy still answers the phone, runs dispatch, and shows up on the harder service calls. That depth shows in the diagnostic. A 30-year tech recognizes a clogged drain line in 60 seconds and can tell from an amp-draw reading whether a capacitor or compressor is failing. A less experienced tech at a commission-based shop may need multiple visits to reach the same diagnosis.

02

Honest Diagnostics, No Commission, No Upsell

Our technicians work on hourly plus completion pay, not commission, so there is no financial incentive to quote a $9,000 replacement when a $250 capacitor will fix the system. About one in eight calls ends with our honest recommendation that replacement makes more sense, and that is your decision, not ours. It is the founding reason Above & Beyond exists. Tommy left a larger SA shop in 2019 because he was tired of watching customers slip through the cracks after they had paid.

03

Google 5.0 Rated, Hundreds of Verified Reviews

Real customers, real reviews, public on the Google Business Profile. The stories are specific: Tommy FaceTiming a vision-impaired customer through a diagnostic the night before his wife's surgery; loaning window units to a family with a stage-four cancer patient when every other SA shop refused the call; arriving at a 5 AM emergency. The reviews tell the story of what honest, commission-free workmanship looks like in practice.

04

Four Manufacturer Designations, Most SA Shops Hold One

Day & Night Elite Dealer (since 2020), Carrier Factory Authorized, American Standard Customer Care, Trane Comfort Specialist. We hold all four, verifiable on each manufacturer's dealer locator. For the customer that means manufacturer-trained installation crews, factory-direct warranty parts in 24 hours vs 5 to 10 business days, extended warranty eligibility, and access to seasonal manufacturer rebates that smaller dealers do not see.

What to Ask Any San Antonio HVAC Contractor Before You Hire

These five questions sort the licensed, insured, properly-trained HVAC contractors from the rest. The answers should be the same whether you call us or anyone else. We will answer all of ours upfront.

01

Are you TDLR Class A licensed and can I verify the license?

Texas TDLR requires licensure for HVAC work. The TACLA prefix indicates Class A. Above & Beyond: License #TACLA00095687E.

02

Are you insured, general liability and workers comp, and can I see a Certificate of Insurance?

A working SA HVAC shop should carry both. Above & Beyond: $20 million in general liability, full workers comp coverage, fleet insurance, and TDLR surety bond. COI available on request.

03

Will I get a written estimate with verbatim pricing before any work starts?

Verbal estimates lead to surprise charges. Above & Beyond: written estimate, verbatim pricing, signed off before any tool comes out of the truck.

04

What does it cost if I decline the recommended repair?

The honest answer is your diagnostic fee with no pressure tactics. Above & Beyond: $89 diagnostic if you decline, waived entirely if you proceed with the repair.

05

What is your workmanship warranty separate from the manufacturer's parts warranty?

Most HVAC companies advertise the manufacturer's parts warranty as if it were their own. The labor side matters more. Above & Beyond: 1-year workmanship on installs (extendable to 10 on best-tier systems), 30-day callback on every repair.

If any San Antonio contractor cannot give you a confident, specific answer to all five, that is your signal. We will answer all five for you on a free in-home consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you have a question we have not covered, call (210) 761-7747 and ask, a real person will answer.

How much does AC repair cost in San Antonio?

+

Most SA AC repairs land between $150 and $700: capacitor $150 to $350, fan motor $300 to $700, refrigerant leak repair $200 to $1,400, compressor $1,200 to $2,500. The $89 diagnostic is waived when you proceed with the repair.

Are you licensed and insured?

+

TDLR Class A #TACLA00095687E. Every tech is EPA 608 Universal certified and A2L trained. $20M general liability, full workers comp, TDLR bond. COI available on request.

Do you offer free estimates?

+

Yes, free in-home estimates for new installations and major replacements, plus free second opinions on competitor quotes.

Do you service older San Antonio homes (1920s to 1960s)?

+

Yes. Alamo Heights, Olmos Park, Terrell Hills, King William, and Monte Vista. Older homes have predictable HVAC challenges including retrofit ductwork, undersized returns, and single-zone cooling. We diagnose for that era, not for a 2015 Stone Oak floorplan.

Do you offer financing?

+

Yes, 0% financing for 6 to 72 months through Wells Fargo, FTL Finance, and AC Credit Services. Approximately 90% approval rate. Soft-credit pre-qualification at the free estimate visit.

Do you do commercial HVAC and property-manager contracts?

+

Yes, light commercial. Retail, office, restaurant, multi-tenant residential, day care, light medical. Maintenance contracts with quarterly visits, photo documentation per unit, and COI with additional-insured endorsements.

Do you work with home insurance claims for storm-damaged AC?

+

Yes. We document the damage with photos, provide an insurance-claim-ready estimate, and coordinate with the adjuster. Estimating is in-house.

How do I know if I need an AC repair or a full system replacement?

+

If your system is under 12 years old and the repair cost is below 30 to 40% of replacement cost, repair almost always wins. If 12 or more years old and the repair exceeds that threshold, replacement usually wins the 10-year math. R-22 systems with a major leak almost always favor replacement since reclaimed R-22 runs $100 or more per pound. About one in eight of our calls ends with our honest recommendation that replacement makes more sense, and that is your decision, not ours.
