Tommy Coffey founded Above & Beyond Air Conditioning & Heating in 2019 with one truck, one technician, and a single-page client list. The thirty years of HVAC work behind that first truck is most of what carried the company through its first six years, and it is most of what shows up on every service call we run today.

Above & Beyond is a single-owner San Antonio shop. Not a franchise, not a private-equity rollup, not a chain pretending to be a local company. The person who answers the phone, dispatches the trucks, and signs off on every installation is the same person whose name is on the license. That is what changes when a company stays small on purpose.

How Above & Beyond Started

Thirty Years Inside the San Antonio HVAC Trade

Tommy started as a porter at a local San Antonio HVAC company when he was barely out of high school. Thirty years of installations, service calls, refrigerant work, ductwork, and rooftop commercial units followed. By the time he went independent in 2019, he had seen most of what the trade can do and most of what it can do wrong.

The reason he started his own shop is one he says plainly: he was tired of letting customers slip through the cracks after they had already paid. At the larger company where he worked before 2019, customer care was a slogan above a desk. Customers who needed a follow-up call, a warranty check, or an honest second look on a quote got lost in the volume. Above & Beyond was built so that would not happen here.

The Lesson That Shaped the First Two Years

The most expensive lesson Tommy learned in those first two years is one he still repeats: if you do not have good internet presence, you will not make any money. Spend more money driving the internet. A San Antonio homeowner with a broken AC at 7 a.m. searches, clicks, and calls the first company that earns their trust online. The trucks, the techs, the warranty paperwork, none of that matters if the right customer cannot find you. So the company invested in being found, and the work invested in being worth finding twice.

CLIENT NOTE: The About page original text says Tommy started at 'his best friend's uncle's company.' This was flagged and rewritten on earlier pages for professionalism. The corrected version above uses 'a local San Antonio HVAC company.' Confirm this is acceptable before publishing.

The Team Behind the Trucks

Five Field Technicians, About 100 Years of Combined Experience

Five field technicians run the service and installation side of the company: Matthew, Victor, TJ, Stevie, and Joshua. Combined, the team carries roughly one hundred years of HVAC field experience, and most of them have worked together for ten years or longer, several at the same company before Above & Beyond. The technician who diagnoses your system has been doing this work since before some of San Antonio's newer subdivisions broke ground.

Tommy holds the Texas TDLR responsible-master license and runs general management of the company. Every install is signed off by him, every major estimate is reviewed by him, and after-hours emergency dispatch routes through him. New hires get added when route capacity earns them, not before. The plan for the next twelve months is two more field technicians and a dedicated installation team, paced to call volume.

How We Work

The Non-Negotiables on Every Job

Three things show up on every service call, every diagnostic, and every install. Photo documentation of what we find, including burned wires, leaking coils, drain-line clogs, and refrigerant gauge readings, taken on the spot and shown to you before any quote is written. A written, line-itemized estimate signed before any work begins, with parts, labor, warranty terms, and timeline broken out. A 30-day callback warranty on every repair, with extended manufacturer parts coverage on new installs (ten to twelve years registered) and a one-year workmanship warranty.

What we will not do is also part of the job. We will not recommend a system your home does not need. We will not quote prices over the phone without seeing the system. A repair-versus-replace conversation is a math problem, not a sales pitch. If a simple repair is the right call, we say so. If a replacement is, we explain why, write you a real quote, and let you decide on your own time.
